University of Illinois Developing Bio-bots Using Heart and Muscle Cells

The field of robotics is experiencing an evolution of sorts. Gone are the days of the big walking metal garbage can like devices and funny camera like appendages. In fact some robots are looking more like creatures of the sea than androids or metal men .
At the University of Illinois they are involved in cutting edge research using heart and muscle cells to create something called Biobots.
These small biologically based robots react to electric stimulation and can move in a chosen direction. The speed of the biobot is determined by frequency of the electric signal.

It remains to be seen where this technology will take us but it is very interesting to see what researchers have been working on.
